The Wellness, Fitness & Health Debate

We are all aware of the recent media coverage of 'wellness' and 'wellness retreats' and whilst we are somewhat obsessed with weight, diet and fitness, perhaps we need to start at the beginning.

To this end we Googled ‘wellness’ and the following definition seemed the most sensible:

"Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth... a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

What is it that makes us deviate from looking after our most important assets - our mental health and body?

At our boot camp we have witnessed many clients who have been through some sort of emotional or physical trauma. This ranges from bereavement to cancer, depression, sexuality issues, separation and accident or injury, to name but a few. Once the karma of the body and mind are disrupted, comfort eating as a reward sets in and the lethargy and feeling of self loathing commences. It is often the mind that causes the issues and the body is the tool that takes the bashing!

Back to mindful basics

The health, diet and fitness industry is full of faddy diets and pictures of beautifully toned human beings who look happy and full of 'wellness', lulling us into deep seated insecurities about our own self worth, happiness and image. At The Camp we aim to remove these modified and filtered image insecurities and go back to the bare eating, exercise and mindful basics which are actually so simple!

So, here it is in The Camp's 10 Simple Steps:

  1. It's 80% diet and 20% exercise
  2. Keep it simple, remove the additives, the colourings and the fast food and add in more veg, fruit and water
  3. Reduce the 'bad' habits (think about these carefully!) but, within reason, treat yourself 2 days out of 7
  4. Get outdoor exercise and enjoy the light, the nature and the fresh air – find some head space
  5. Stretch, breathe and relax – find some time for yoga, pilates or meditation
  6. Be happy – meet friends, have a laugh and don't take yourself too seriously
  7. Lift weights and chose new and varied exercise you are motivated by (alone/with people you like or both!)
  8. Try to find a job you enjoy, voluntary or charity work that is motivational – be kind to someone at least once a day!
  9. Reduce contact with toxic people and energise yourself by being surrounded by those whose company you enjoy
  10. Eat well, sleep well and exercise effectively - DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CHANGE
